Episode 38: 11/1/16

It's November and we have officially started our Countdown to Garber. Listen to Bryan, Yosief, Bill and Brad break down the biggest stories from the previous week and provide some speculation on changes coming to the USL, FC Cincinnati and MLS.

The USL announced expansion in two more cities last week with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Ottawa Fury joining for the 2017 season. Listen as the guys give their thoughts on how these two teams will change the league in good & bad ways.

USL President Jake Edwards stopped by last week to discuss USL expansion and some changes coming in 2017. Hear the panel explain how this will effect your favorite club or perhaps help in the upcoming season.

Your FC Cincinnati supporters groups have been working hard on how to plan ahead for the Don Garber visit. Bill explains what they have in store and how you can be involved.

Finally, the guys expand on some MLS expansion rumors. Bryan also offers some tin foil theories on what they mean and how it could impact FC Cincinnati in the short-term.

Oct 29, 2016

On this special edition of Cincinnati Soccer Talk we visit with Jake Edwards, the President of USL. Jake took time out of his very busy schedule to fill us in on some developments within US soccer’s structure, particularly Division 2 status. Plus we have breaking news surrounding league rules that we bring you EXCLUSIVELY on Cincinnati Soccer Talk.

Here are some highlights of our interview:
Jake talks about his playing days and how he got involved with soccer stateside after a successful career playing in England and for the Charleston Battery.

One of the bigger topics Jake is dealing with quite a bit right now is league expansion. He talks about the league’s plans for expansion and why some markets are favored over others. He also doesn’t like to put a cap or limit on how many teams could potentially play in USL. There’s also plans to make USL a 3 division league with a Central Conference hopefully added by the 2018 season.

We asked him about the league’s application to USSF regarding Division 2 status.

Jake also broke some news surrounding some league rules, particularly the 5-substitution rule.

We discuss the off field success of FC Cincinnati as Jake had a hunch this could be a big year for the orange and blue.

Now that the USL season has officially concluded, we have absolutely nothing to discuss on this week’s podcast. YEAH RIGHT! How about the big USL expansion news that dropped Tuesday? Or FC Cincinnati parting ways with an Assistant Coach? Lots and lots to discuss this week.

Assistant Head Coach Ryan Martin and FC Cincinnati have parted ways. Hear our thoughts on the move.

The USL announced expansion in two more regions today with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Ottawa Fury joining for the 2017 season.

We’re then joined by Jeremy Lance, play-by-play broadcaster for the Dayton Dynamo and co-host on Wrong Side of the Pond. In this episode we discuss his start in soccer broadcasting and his thoughts on the incredible season FC Cincinnati had.

We debuted a new segment this week called “Yo, Yo, Yo, #askyosief”. So far the responses have been great. Keep sending in your questions for Yosief!

We took Cincinnati Soccer Talk to the next level last night! Our very first LIVE broadcast, and fortunately for us, the show went off without a hitch! Except for maybe my Mom calling in. That was a first.

Bill, Bryan, Brad and I visit with FC Cincinnati’s GM Jeff Berding. We get his state of the union so to speak. Jeff is the man and we really appreciate him taking a few minutes out of his very busy schedule to join us on the podcast.

We take phone calls for the first time and hear from FCC fans in Cleveland, Nashville, and more.

We look ahead to the upcoming offseason, particularly the potential news headlines. Let's also not forget the soccer don, MLS Commissioner Don Garber visiting Cincinnati in late November. Come out and support the city of Cincinnati and FCC. Let's show the Commish why Cincinnati is a BIG LEAGUE TOWN!

30,187 tickets were sold for Sunday’s first round playoff loss to the Charleston Battery, 2-1. Despite the close loss, plus a complete jobbing from the referee, there were plenty of positives to take away.

Bill, Bryan, Yosief and I recap the 2-1 loss. We all still can’t get over many of you turned up for a match this summer as FC Cincinnati continued to smash attendance records.

The officiating in this match was less than stellar, BUT, it wasn’t the reason why FC Cincinnati lost.

Mark your calendars, we’ll be taking the show live more often now that we’re in the offseason.

We look ahead to an eventful offseason.

FC Cincinnati finished the regular season with their 4th consecutive clean sheet with a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh. They finished the year with 56 points which had they played in the Western Conference would have been enough points to have the 1st seed. Now they get set to host their first ever playoff game on Sunday when the Charleston Battery come back to town.

In This Episode

Brad, Bill, Yosief and I recap the 1-0 win in Pittsburgh. Sean Okoli scored his 16th goal which was tops in the USL this season. Congratulations Ugo on winning the Golden Boot!

We’ve been running our fan poll the past 2 weeks asking for YOUR player of the year. On this week’s episode we award Harrison Delbridge with that honor. He was gracious enough to visit with us to talk about his start in soccer. He also talked about being approached to come to FC Cincinnati and how much that excited him. Plus he compared the Timbers Army in Portland and The Bailey in Cincinnati, they’re very similar.

There was some other news surroundings other soccer leagues in this country that may have an effect on the future of USL. In this article by SI’s Brian Straus, the NASL is in for some troubling times ahead. You can also hear more discussion about it on the Inverted Triangle Podcast.

We look ahead to the first postseason game against the Charleston Battery, which funny enough, the first regular season USL match featured these exact two teams.

FC Cincinnati continues to dominate the headlines with their eye popping home attendances this season. Once again, the hottest team in the Queen City broke their own USL single game attendance record with over 24,000 showing up Saturday night. Now with just one more regular season game remaining, fans of the orange and blue are coming out in droves to quickly snatch up those PLAYOFF TICKETS! On to the show!

In This Episode

Brad, Michael and I recap the 0-0 draw in Pittsburgh. The first 60 minutes or so of that match were ok. The last 30 minutes was some of the hardest soccer to watch this season. Despite that, FC Cincinnati nearly came away with 3 points when Casey Townsend put a shot off the Pittsburgh crossbar.

We were really excited this week to have the newest member of FC Cincinnati join us on the podcast, forward Casey Townsend. Casey talked about the approach to come to Cincinnati and explained why it was a “no brainer” to make the move. He was really impressed with the home crowd on Saturday night. Just how much did he get a touch on the only goal of the game? Casey shares how it was scored as well.

The inaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk Player of the Year Award has been announced. Get your votes in people!

We look ahead to the final game of the regular season against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a familiar foe from last week.

FC Cincinnati went to North Carolina over the weekend and came home with 3 points and a clean sheet. Despite that close scoreline, you can argue that the match was never really in the balance. FC Cincinnati dominated from the opening kick till the final whistle. Next up, two matches in three days for the Orange and Blue.

In This Episode

Bryan, Yosief and I recap the win on the road against Wilmington. Good news, the clean sheet returned and it was shared by Mitch Hildebrandt and Dallas Jaye!

We are proud to announce we raised $1,100 for Sports Games for Kids during our Inaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk FootGolf Classic.

The inaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk Player of the Year Award has been announced. Get your votes in people!

We look ahead to the final home game at Nippert Stadium this fall against Orlando City B. We should mention we’re only talking about the regular season. There’s a chance Nippert could host a USL playoff game.

Talk about squeaky bum time! Whew! A late handball in the box saves FC Cincinnati’s bacon. Say what you want about Sean Okoli but where would this team be without him this season? Certainly not 3rd place I can almost guarantee that! On this week’s episode we look back at the dreadful week that WAS and recap a massive win from Labor Day.

In This Episode

Bill, Yosief and I recap the grim performance from midweek last week in Charlotte where FC Cincinnati lost to 10-men Independence. Frankly inexcusable. I know the 3rd goal from Charlotte was a deflected own goal, but even with the man advantage, it never actually appeared that FC Cincinnati has a man advantage.

Monday’s win over Saint Louis FC saw FC Cincinnati move from 6th to 3rd in the Eastern Conference standings. I don’t think we can say it enough about just how huge those 3 points may end up at the end of the season.

We look ahead to the final matchup against the Wilmington Hammerheads, a team very much in the playoff hunt but are getting desperate and need results, much like FC Cincinnati.

Bryan, Yosief and Bill recap the two matches for FC Cincinnati including the now dreaded VAR! They analyze what went right, what went wrong and how FC Cincinnati can move forward onto the playoffs. Listen to what the guys think about the fire Sean Okoli showed at New York as well as the tactical changes Harkes employed vs. Rochester. It was a busy week and we attempt to recap it all.

The guys also provide brief breakdowns of FC Cincinnati's upcoming opponents and how they can win. FC Cincinnati travels to the hot Charlotte Independence after a cancelled match earlier in the summer. We also look towards FC Cincinnati's first home match vs. Saint Louis F.C. Listen and give us your t

Even though FC Cincinnati had the weekend off, there was an absolute ton going on around the club. The biggest event, in our opinion of course, was the Inaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk FootGolf Classic on Saturday. Thanks to all who braved the weather and came out to support a great cause. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event so stay tuned!

In This Episode

Brad, Yosief, Bill and I recap the exciting events at Reeves Golf Course and 50 West Brewery at the CST FootGolf Classic. Lots of fun was had by all. FCC President Jeff Berding stopped by along with Francisco Narbón, Michael Millay, Jamie Dell and Álvaro Anton Ripoll. Thanks to you were able to raise over $1,100 for Sports Games for Kids! The event couldn’t have happened though without the support of the Joseph Auto Group, Touchstone Marketing and 513 Shirts.

When I first launched CST back in the day, I created a list of names of people that were must have guests on our show. Jason Davis was at the TOP of this list. You may recognize Jason previously as the host of such shows as Soccer Morning and The Best Soccer Show. Now he can be heard Monday-Friday onSiriusXM FC’s United States of Soccer. Jason offers up his take on FC Cincinnati story from the national perspective. We touch on the ongoing story that is MLS expansion and where FC Cincinnati fits into the discussion.

What a massive week for FC Cincinnati. They return home on Wednesday night to take on 6th place Rochester and then hit the road to New York to take on 1st place Red Bulls II on Sunday night. Both teams have taken 3 points from the orange and blue this season. We offer up our predictions as always.

Whew! What a match in Richmond! As much as we want FC Cincinnati to win every match, you’ll take a point on the road in Richmond. The Kickers were one of the hottest teams in USL heading into the match. Andrew Wiedeman’s heroics helped secure a massive point for FC Cincinnati.

On This Episode

Bryan, Bill, Brad and I recap the draw in Richmond. A lot of times you’ll see results, for instance the first match against Richmond, where a draw feels like a loss. This was not the case on Saturday night. There were a lot of factors involved Saturday night, the large pitch, the heat index, injuries, etc.

The first free kick goal in FC Cincinnati history belongs to Andrew Wiedeman. He scored the first USL goal for the Orange and Blue and now he adds this accolade. Add to it a USL Team of the Week honor as well, his 3rd of the season. Now FC Cincinnati has the weekend off and will need to get rested up for the Rochester Rhinos who make their first trip to Nippert next Wednesday.

We’re pleased to be joined this week on the podcast by James Brown and Mike Strauss from Spontaneous Productions. They’re putting together the film “Hometeam Advantage” which is a film about FC Cincinnati. James and Mike fill us in on the project and how you can get involved.

We then look ahead to the busy week ahead for all things soccer in the Cincinnati area. Just because there is no match this weekend doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do! We preview them all including our HUGE event Saturday night. We’re still looking for 2 more footgolf teams! To get registered, visit CincinnatiSoccerTalk.com/footgolf. If you don’t want to play footgolf but would like to come to dinner at 50 West Brewery, it’s $20.

After some much needed, and deserved time off, FC Cincinnati is hitting the road this weekend to take on 4th place Richmond in Virginia Saturday night. Richmond is one of the hottest teams in the USL at the moment so it should be a great matchup.

On This Episode

Bryan, Yosief and I recap the win over Montreal. Sean Okoli continues to enjoy playing against Montreal with another 2 goal performance. It also earned him his 4th USL Team of the Week honor this season. The opportunities for more goals were there. Jimmy McLaughlin hit the post, and narrowly missed another goal just wide of the post in the 1st half. Despite the clean sheet, new CB tandem Austin Berry and Even Lee struggled at time against FC Montreal.

We discuss the new CST Postgame show that was announced on Monday this week. Join us immediately following the match on Saturday night on Facebook live where YOU can have your say about FC Cincinnati.

We then looked into our crystal ball to decide the outcome of Saturday night’s match in Richmond.

FC Cincinnati batted fourth place Charleston Battery to a 1-1 draw Saturday night. The squad must now turnaround and embark on their longest road stretch of the season. Listen as the guys recap the Battery match and outline the what awaits FC Cincinnati. Special Guest Taylor Rockwell of the Total Soccer Show joins the guys this week.

On This Episode

On Episode 24  Bill, Brad and Bryan recap the events of last week. FC Cincinnati faced the Charleston Battery in USL action while scrimmaged the Dayton Dynamo (NPSL) mid week. 19,229 fans packed in Nippert Stadium as a physical match transpired between the third and fourth place clubs battled each other.

In segment two, Taylor Rockwell of the Total Soccer Show join Brad and Bryan to discuss the USL, Total Soccer Show, next week's opponent the Richmond Kickers, US Soccer, MLS and more. The Total Soccer Show is one of the most popular soccer podcasts in America and has just moved to a new weekly format on August 1st. Check out their show on TotalSoccerShow.com or subscribe HERE.

Jul 27, 2016

After a tough mid week loss, FC Cincinnati bounces back in spectacular fashion and wins the inaugural River Cities Cup with a 2-0 win over dreaded Louisville City FC. Now the orange and blue continue to face a tough task when the Charleston Battery come to town this weekend.

On This Episode

Yosief, Bryan, Michael and I recap the events of last week. FC Cincinnati faced a very tough opponent in the New York Red Bulls last Wednesday and were in a winning position late in the 2nd half but 2 goals put the Baby Bulls ahead of FCC 2-1. More importantly, FC Cincinnati bounced back with a massive 2-0 win over league leaders Louisville. What a performance by the banged up squad. Injuries are hitting the midfield at the worst time. Corbin Bone though put in a shift that was nothing short of spectacular which also earned him team of the week honors.

The Dancing Man, Jimmy McLaughlin stops by for his first visit to the CST Podcast. Jimmy fills us in on life in Cincinnati and how even his expectations have been surpassed this season. He also tells us why he wears the number 20 and what exactly the BePositive Foundation means to him.

Bryan goes on a rant late in the podcast in response to some posts on Reddit regarding Supporters Groups. Are you in a Supporters Group? What do you make of these comments? Maybe you’re not in a SG? What’s keeping you from joining? We’d love your feedback!

The 2-0 result isn’t what was important from Saturday night’s friendly with Crystal Palace. The biggest takeaway was the 35,061 who showed up to witness a soccer match, the largest in Ohio EVER. The Orange and Blue held their own against their Premier League foe. Despite the week off, this week’s matches provide a massive test to see if FC Cincinnati is ready for the postseason spotlight.

On This Episode

Yosief, Brad, Bill and I recap the events of Saturday night. Crystal Palace came to town and knocked off FC Cincinnati 2-0 but the result wasn’t all that important. It was a celebration of soccer in Cincinnati. The South London Times is calling FC Cincinnati the “Most Exciting Soccer Team in America”. Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew even said he’d love to come back to Cincinnati in the future.

We look ahead to tonight’s match against New York Red Bulls II, or as we like to call them, the Baby Bulls. There’s a reason they’re sitting in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference folks. This team is legit.

The final leg of the Dirty River Derby will go down on Saturday night when FC Cincinnati plays host to Louisville City FC. It may not be the last time we see these guys if all goes well in the postseason.

Our very own Brad Weigel was on Lance McAlister’s radio program Tuesday afternoon to discuss theInaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk FootGolf Classic. If you missed it, you can download the interview with Brad by clicking here.

Well it was a week that saw FC Cincinnati’s unbeaten streak come to an end, but the good news is that the orange and blue started a new streak with a 2-1 win Saturday night. Plus with Barclays Premier League side Crystal Palace visiting the Queen City Saturday night, it’s arguably the biggest soccer event in Cincinnati soccer history!

On This Episode

Yosief, Bryan, Bill and I recap the loss to Rochester last week. We also discuss the bounce back against Saint Louis FC on Saturday night. We also were very excited that John Harkes deployed a 4-4-2 formation and it definitely paid off.

We visit with Tom Grabo, the CincySportsGuy from Sports Games for Kids. We’re excited to be working with Tom for the Inaugural Cincinnati Soccer Talk FootGolf Classic coming up August 20th at Reeves Golf Course!

We've made it to 20 EPISODES and FC Cincinnati is unbeaten in their last 11 USL matches! On to the Show! Cincinnati Soccer Talk Podcast

Jun 29, 2016

You know what they say about ties? Well, we’ll take a 0-0 draw against the 1st place team in the Eastern Conference. Especially when you consider that same team came into Nippert back in April and put up 3 first half goals. FC Cincinnati continues to get better with each week and they showed they could hang with the Eastern Conference’s best team. Now they’re back home to take on the team they beat for the first win in franchise history back in April when they faced Bethlehem Steel FC. On to the show!

On This Episode

Yosief, Brad, Bryan and I recap the scoreless draw between Louisville City FC and FC Cincinnati. It wasn’t the most entertaining match we’ve ever watched but a point is a point. Brad and Yosief made the trek down to Louisville and each had a great experience. We learned about the Plastic Cup with The Pride and Die Innenstadt bussed people down to the game as well. It sounded like a good time was had by all. More importantly, FC Cincinnati was represented well in Louisville.

We discussed some possible lineup changes we’d like to see FC Cincinnati deploy, particularly at forward with Sean Okoli and LB Tyler Polak. Both have done great things this year for the club but there have been issues with both. Should John Harkes rotate the lineup or are you happy with where this team is at?

We hit up the mailbag and Twitter to answer some listener questions.

We wrapped up the episode by looking ahead to Saturday’s 6 PM match against Bethlehem Steel FC.

Nick is out of town so the cats will play. While the main man is on vacation Bryan, Bill, Yosief and Brad break down the week for Episode 18 of the podcast.

Jun 16, 2016

Thanks for all your patience during our absence last week. Unfortunately schedules wouldn’t cooperate and we couldn’t get a podcast recorded. But we’re happy to be back! Thanks for all your feedback as well. With summer being here and vacations looming, it’s going to be tougher to do these shows but we will do our absolute best to get it done! Just like FC Cincinnati is getting things done on the pitch with another win over the weekend.

On This Episode

Yosief, Bill, Bryan and I recap the 2-1 win over FC Montreal. It was great to see forward Sean Okoli score from the run of play. He also slotted home a PK for the other goal. Watch out for this ugly trend, FC Cincinnati giving up late goals. It seems to be happening frequently.

We also had the chance to visit with the newest FCC Supporter Group, The Queen City Firm. We had a chance to chat with founders Jeremy Burnett and Ryan Cocola. Hear what these gentlemen had to say about their ideas and thoughts about starting a new SG.

The club announced some new rules this week surrounding the Bailey. Bryan was not happy about it.

Lastly, we gave our thoughts on the upcoming home match against Toronto FC II, a team that’s struggling in the Eastern Conference.

What rust? Despite having an unexpected week off from action, FC Cincinnati continues their unbeaten streak after a 2-0 win over the visiting Harrisburg City Islanders. It was a physical match to say the least. Now the Orange and Blue have a tough week ahead with two matches in four days.

On This Episode

Yosief, Brad, Bryan and I recap the 2-0 win over Harrisburg. One of the major talking points from that match was the red card for Harrisburgh’s Aaron Wheeler after he elbowed CB Harrison Delbridge in the face when the two jumped for a header. Not to mention the kick to the face just before halftime that was missed by everyone during the broadcast.

FC Cincinnati hits the road on Wednesday night to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the US Open Cup. We debated whether or not you put out a roster that features a lot of backups so that you can save your starters for this weekend’s match against the Richmond Kickers. Do you sacrifice the Open Cup to focus on the USL slate? It’s an interesting debate.

Speaking of the Richmond Kickers, they’ll make their first visit to Nippert Stadium on Saturday night at 7 pm. Richmond is coming off an ugly loss to the worst team in the Eastern Conference this past weekend. In other words, you know they’re going to look to bounce back in a big way. Can the winning train continue to roll Saturday night?

Even though FC Cincinnati had the weekend off, the club still continued to make news last week. Their match against Charlotte was rained out 2 days prior to the match. Despite the rainout, FC Cincinnati announced their international friendly coming up in July. They also notched their first win in US Open Cup history when they knocked off Indy Eleven NPSL.

On This Episode

Bill Wolf and Michael Walker recap their experience at Nippert last week during FC Cincinnati’s US Open Cup debut win over Indy Eleven NPSL. We also discussed the next matchup in the tournament and what it means if they win. If they win, they’ll head up north to face the Columbus Crew at a neutral venue in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Boo.

We also were stoked to hear that FC Cincinnati will be hosting FA Cup Finalist, Crystal Palace, in a summer friendly on July 16th. Who would have thought that in Year 1 of this franchise, the Barclays Premier League would be calling? That’s exciting news for our city as well as the club.

Last but not least, we look ahead to Saturday’s home date against the Harrisburg City Islanders. This is a side that drew with FC Cincinnati a few weeks ago at home. They’re coming off a 2-1 win over Toronto FC on Tuesday night. Should be a solid matchup at Nippert Saturday night!

Well done Cincinnati! 23K showed up to watch FC Cincinnati knock off those pesky Riverhounds from Pittsburgh. It wasn’t the prettiest performance but defensively it was stellar. Harrison Delbridge, Paul Nicholson and Mitch Hildebrandt all contributed to the first clean sheet in team history. Now the club faces another busy week as they’ve got two matches to prepare for.

On This Episode We welcome Bill Wolf to the podcast this week. We also recap the win for the orange and blue this weekend. Something we’ve noticed already, FC Cincinnati will be receiving everyone’s best shot this year. Despite the tumultuous week in Pittsburgh, they came out and played FC Cincinnati well.

We were visited this week by Jeff Smith, the VP for Ticketing and Sales for FC Cincinnati. Jeff talks about the movement that's taking place with soccer in this town and region.

We also look ahead to Wednesday night’s Open Cup match as FC Cincinnati plays host to Indy Eleven NPSL. FCC will then close out the week by traveling down to Charlotte for leg 2 of the Queen City Cup.
